Musicians' Union

The Musicians’ Union (MU) is the only trade union for musicians in the UK. From rock bands to classical quartets, songwriters to session players, the MU represents over 30,000 musicians across the 4 nations.

The MU negotiates with all major employers in the industry, as well as offering advice and services tailored to freelance musicians’ needs at every stage of their career. That could be career advice, networking and training opportunities. Or help with a contract for a gig, recording, songwriting, touring or merchandising. It might be legal advice and assistance. Or help chasing unpaid fees.

The Union campaigns for fair pay, arts funding and to keep music live. With 30,000 members, the MU can influence policy in all Parliaments and Assemblies. Lobbying successes include the Live Music Act and its extension, which have made it easier to put on gigs. The Union are also fighting to protect musicians’ rights during Brexit, to protect music venues, and for a fair internet for performers so musicians are paid fairly for use of their work.

The Depot

Set up in 2007, The Depot is fast becoming one of the busiest rehearsal and recording studios in Edinburgh.

As well as boasting 4 fully equipped and acoustically treated rehearsal rooms with top end gear, The Depot has recently expanded and now has 5 monthly rented spaces for bands looking for their own long term space.

The Depot’s recording studio has recently undergone some major upgrades in software, outboard and room acoustics, and has solidified its status as one of the best studio spaces in Edinburgh. Broken Records, The Banana Sessions, Little Kicks and We Were Promised Jet Packs are just a few of the bands that use The Depot.

Captain Toms

Captain Toms is Aberdeen’s largest rehearsal / recording / tuition studio. They also run successful independent label Fat Hippy Records and have worked with many of Aberdeen’s most successful bands such as The X-certs, Driveblind, The Lorelei, Thrashist Regime and Gerry Jablonski & The Electric Band.

Captain Toms boasts four acoustically treated, soundproofed, purpose built rehearsal rooms. All fully equipped with a PA system, drum kit, guitar amps and a bass amp. The purpose built Logic 8 digital recording studio provides affordable recording services for just about anything that makes a noise!
