Spotify has introduced AI Persona badges, giving listeners more information about the identity behind an artist profile.
The new badges are specifically about who an artist presents themselves as.
They are not a label for music that has simply used AI somewhere in the creative process.
Here’s what you need to know.
What is an AI Persona?
Spotify defines an AI Persona as an artist project built around an AI-generated public identity.
In simple terms, if an artist profile presents an AI-generated character or identity as the artist, rather than a real person or group of people, Spotify may consider it an AI Persona.
The important distinction is that the badge relates to the identity of the artist, not how their music was created.
Does using AI to make music mean I’m an AI Persona?
No. Using AI tools as part of your creative process does not automatically make your artist profile an AI Persona.
For example, using AI to assist with artwork, production, mixing, mastering, ideas or other parts of your creative workflow is separate from presenting an AI-generated identity as the artist behind the music. Spotify has separate features, including AI Credits, designed to provide information about how AI has been used in the creation of music.
Where do AI Persona badges appear on Spotify?
Spotify’s AI Persona badges are now live.
The badges are initially rolling out to listeners on mobile and can appear:
-
– On Artist Pages
– In Search
– In the Now Playing View
Spotify will also begin displaying the badge alongside tracks in playlists, with desktop and web support following the initial mobile rollout.
Listeners can tap the badge to find out whether the artist has self-disclosed that they are an AI Persona or whether Spotify applied the label following its own review.
Do I need to tell Spotify if my artist project is an AI Persona?
Yes. If your artist project represents an AI-generated identity, Spotify is encouraging artist teams to disclose this through Spotify for Artists.
Spotify is not relying solely on artists to self-disclose. It will also review profiles that appear to represent AI-generated identities and may apply an AI Persona badge itself.
What happens if Spotify thinks my artist profile is an AI Persona?
Spotify may review your artist profile and apply a Likely AI Persona label if it believes the identity being presented is AI-generated.
If Spotify applies a label following its own review, you will be notified and given the opportunity to either self-disclose your AI Persona status or appeal the decision.
Spotify has also said that listeners will be able to report profiles they believe represent AI Personas later in 2026.
Will being labelled as an AI Persona affect my music on Spotify?
Music from artists labelled as AI Personas will generally be excluded from Spotify’s personalized recommendations.
There are exceptions where a listener has demonstrated active and intentional interest in the artist – for example, by following them.
AI Persona music is also not eligible for sponsored recommendations, including Discovery Mode and Spotify display campaigns.
This means an AI Persona label could substantially affect how your music is discovered organically through Spotify.
Can EmuBands distribute music from an AI Persona?
Our existing policy on AI-generated music still applies.
At EmuBands, we welcome the use of AI as a creative tool. Artists can use technology to assist and enhance their creative process. However, we do not distribute music that is wholly or predominantly AI-generated, where the genuine creative contribution from the artist is minimal.
An AI Persona badge relates to the identity presented on Spotify rather than the music itself, so the two policies are not exactly the same. However, if your project uses an AI-generated identity alongside predominantly AI-generated music, it may not meet our requirements for distribution.
You can read more about our approach in our By Humans, For Humans policy.
What if I use an illustrated, animated or fictional artist identity?
An artist having a fictional identity does not necessarily mean it is an AI Persona.
Spotify’s focus is on profiles that present an AI-generated identity as the artist. Spotify has said its initial reviews will focus particularly on public identities that appear to use photorealistic AI-generated people.
If you believe Spotify has incorrectly identified your project as an AI Persona, you will have the opportunity to appeal its decision.
What should I do if my artist profile is an AI Persona?
We recommend being transparent.
If your artist project genuinely represents an AI-generated identity, you can disclose this directly through Spotify for Artists rather than waiting for Spotify to review and potentially label the profile itself.
Listeners will be able to see whether an artist disclosed their AI Persona status voluntarily or whether Spotify applied the label following a review.
What should I do if Spotify labels me incorrectly?
If Spotify applies an AI Persona label to your profile and you believe the decision is incorrect, you will be able to appeal it. As this process is managed directly by Spotify and relates to your artist identity on Spotify, appeals will need to be handled through Spotify’s process.
Does this change EmuBands’ approach to AI?
No. We welcome Spotify’s introduction of this policy. We believe there is an important distinction between using AI as a creative tool and asking AI to be the creator. Technology will continue to change the way music is created, marketed and distributed, and we welcome tools that help genuine artists do more.
At the same time, we support greater transparency around AI-generated content and identities. Listeners should be able to understand who – or what – is behind the music they’re listening to.
Our focus remains the same: supporting real artists, labels and managers building sustainable careers around genuine human creativity.
